We had our granddaughters out to visit for the holidays and it was grand. Plenty of children running around opening presents. A crazy time!

Balloon Glow 2009

The weather for this year’s Bluegrass Balloon Festival was awful, and rain canceled most of the events, but we did get to see the balloon glow one evening before more storms rolled in. It was, as always, very cool to see all of the balloons up close like that.

Our oldest turned 35, and as he usually prefers, we kept things low key. We got him a new “phone” (although he uses it for almost anything but actually talking) and a little cake. He blew all the candles out on the first try – what a good boy he is

At Ye Olde Faire

The whole family and a few friends went to the KY Renaissance Faire, a favorite of the kids. There were a lot of new games and attractions there this year, and the weather was beautiful. This was Joshua’s first fair and Sarah’s first where she could actually walk around and enjoy it.

We got to play, see a few shows and even enjoy the Tournament (complete with Jousting)!

It was also fun to see all of the people dressed up in various costumes. There were faries and pirates and knights and priests all over the place!

Cow Appreciation Day

Chick-fil-A is one of the kid’s favorite fast food places and they had a promotion today that offered free chicken to anyone dressed like a cow. Thus, a frenzy of crafting ensued and many cows were created!

The children had fun creating their costumes and loved their free kids meals. It was a very clever promotion and the restaurant was crowded, which made it more fun for everyone. We even saw one of Jordan’s teachers dressed as a cow – along with her daughter who is Sarah’s age and from the same province in China. A really fun evening!

Adoption Picnic

Every year for the past few years, we go to the annual Adoption Assistance picnic. They are the agency that helped us with both adoptions, and we love to go there and talk to the friends we have made at the agency and among the adoptive families. Julie and her staff are more like family at this point.

The children had great fun as usual, riding the ponies, bouncing in the inflatable and getting their faces painted. Can’t wait till next year!

Thunder Over Louisville

“Thunder” is one of the biggest fireworks displays in the country and kicks off the Kentucky Derby Festival – two weeks of charity events, parties and other goings on leading up to the first Saturday in May. We sat close enough that the concussions shook our clothes. The kids had a great time, even though we had to walk 45 minutes to get there.

Gallopalooza 2009

Kentucky is pretty much the horse capitol of the planet, and lots of things have grown up around the Kentucky Derby and horse racing in general. One of those things is Gallopalooza which is an ongoing event where artists paint (and otherwise adorn) statues of horses all around town. For 2009, they are adding 132 more statues to the program and they will be displayed all around town. The kids had fun getting their faces painted and doing the horse scavenger hunt, while Mommy and Daddy loved looking at all of the different artwork on display.

It’s A Blitz

Today was Jordan’s big holiday play – and he got to sing one of the solos. He played the reindeer Blitzen who is a big tough football player and sang a song called “It’s A Bitz”.

Of course Joshua wanted to be the star of the show too, so he fidgeted and made faces, but he clapped for his big brother all the same.

Storm Update From LG&E

As of 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 15th, 231,000 LG&E customers and 30,000 KU customers remain without power.

At the height of the wind event, about 301,000 LG&E customers and 75,000 KU customers were without power. Strong residual winds from Hurricane Ike caused extensive damage across the LG&E and KU service territories.

Crews are on the scene working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible; however, it is anticipated that this will be an extended outage period for customers. This event has resulted in the largest number of LG&E customer outages in 30 years.
